Since January 2008 we have been using "The Creative Learning Journey," an approach to topic work developed by Bexley Authority, which focuses on a skills based approach to learning, rather than being content based. This allows us to have more flexibility over the content and also enables the children to be involved in the planning of activities, which is motivating and engaging. It also means that learning is relevant for them and their particular learning styles. We try to be as creative and parctical as we can, but we also try to incorporate lots of cross curricular Literacy, Numeracy and ICT.The flexible content has allowed us to develop whole school topics. We also have whole school topics.
Literacy and maths are taught as discrete topics during the morning which do have cross- curricular links to the topic where appropriate. Where there are appropriate links to Science, RE, Personal, Social and Health Education and Music, these are included as part of the topics, otherwise they too are discrete in order to ensure coverage. Primary French is taught formally at Key Stage 2 in all Year groups and children Key Stage One have experience of Primary languages at an informal level.
Each topic starts with a launch event to whet the children's appetites and the topic finishes with an end product or event. This may be a special assembly, a focus day in class or even a visit out of school. All classes also put together a Creative Learning Letter with their teacher to tell their parents and carers what they have learned and enjoyed and a portfolio of work that they have produced.
Topics may change as children are consulted regarding what they want to learn about. Parent and carer views are also sought on the children's ideas and how parents feel they can support them. Children complete (Big) Books of Homework, through which they are encouraged to engage in homework with their families in a creative and meaningful way.
The children's achievement of skills is recorded in their own personal learning journey which follows them through school.
